Patio Roof vs Pergola Which Is Right for Your Backyard?

Patio Roof vs Pergola Which Is Right for Your Backyard?

"Pergola" and "patio roof" are often used as if they mean the same thing, but they're quite different structures. One of the most popular searches in Australia is "pergola with roof". That tells us a lot: most people want the look of a pergola with the protection of a solid roof.

Here's how the two compare, so you can choose the right cover for your backyard.

What's a pergola?

A traditional pergola is an open frame of posts and beams with rafters or slats across the top. It gives filtered shade and a great spot for climbing plants. But it doesn't keep out rain, and it only partly blocks the sun.

That's why so many pergolas end up with shade cloth, polycarbonate sheets or a retrofitted roof added later. By then you've effectively paid for the structure twice.

What's a patio roof?

A patio roof is a solid roofed structure. It keeps rain, UV and heat off your outdoor area all year round. It can attach to the house (fascia, wall or flyover) or stand on its own in the yard. In practice, it's the "pergola with a roof" that most people are searching for, but designed as a roof from day one.

Why insulated patio roofs are so popular

If you're after the comfort of an indoor room outdoors, an insulated patio roof is the upgrade to look at. Our insulated roof panels are 1m wide and come in thicknesses from 50mm up to 200mm. They cut heat and rain noise under the roof, and the underside gives you a finished ceiling look without extra lining.

Thinking of a thicker panel? The larger panel sizes need to be engineered specifically for the area where your patio will be installed. Get in touch and we'll work out the right panel for your site.

  • Cooler in summer: the insulated core stops the roof radiating heat onto you.
  • Quieter in storms: no drumming on a single sheet of metal.
  • Cooler inside too: an insulated roof beside the house can help shade and cool the rooms next to it.

Prefer to keep costs down? V-Line single skin roofing is a strong, lighter-budget option. Read insulated vs V-Line to compare, or browse insulated roof sheets if you're replacing an existing roof.

When a pergola still makes sense

An open pergola is still a lovely choice if you mainly want a garden feature, a frame for climbing plants, or dappled shade over a small courtyard. If you want somewhere to sit when it rains, though, a patio roof is the better investment.
